Near the end of World War II, Hitler’s 13th Panzer Division seizes Castle Dracula to serve as the secret testing ground for a flying bat-like Nazi super weapon. However, unknown to these invaders, the castle’s crumbling ruins are still haunted by the legendary vampire’s final Rumanian victim, a young Jewish girl whom Dracula has cursed to stalk the earth forever in the shape of a cat.

###

Human evil at its most hateful meets the best in classic supernatural horror...with a diabolical twist.
The year is 1944. The Nazi juggernaut is jackbooting its way across the shattered landscape of war-torn Rumania. Their destination a place whose very name evokes shudders and fearful signs of the cross, a place where the Third Reich's engineers can work with the certainty that they will never be disturbed. In the cobwebbed solitude of Count Dracula's ancient castle, they set about final development of the jet-engined Horten XVIII fighter bomber, a fearsome tailless aircraft wrought in the shape of giant black bat.
But deep in the castle's crypts, undead life stirs. Of the horrors that ended there half a century earlier, one vestige still remains a deceptively frail black cat. This is a special cat, endowed with bizarre powers, a cat that has waited 50 years for her opportunity to reshape the course of human history....
DRACULA'S CAT is more than a horror story. It's a moving, impeccably researched portrayal of daily military life during World War II, as seen from the German point of view. In particular it shows the awakening of one kindly, unsuspecting young soldier. Across the course of story, he learns about love about war...and about the extremity of the horrors hidden behind the twisted cross printed on the flag he has sworn to defend.

Dracula Cat edition by Gregory Nicoll Literature Fiction eBooks

Some years ago Greg Nicoll got into a discussion of quality horror fiction vs. salable horror fiction. When someone observed that all a horror novel really needed was a cover featuring vampires, someone else added, "Or Nazis." And someone else put in "Or a cat."

Nicoll said, "So a perfect horror novel title would be "Dracula's Cat," but the cover illustration would include a swastika."

Go ahead and laugh and get it out of your system. Okay now?

Here's the skinny: Nicoll has written a fine novel that combines those schlocky notions. He has made gold from dross. DRACULA'S CAT works on more levels than you'd think possible. Launching the tale with a well-remembered scene from Dracula--with a twist--he tells us how the Count treated Maria, an unfortunate young woman who had already lost loved ones to the vampire king. Dracula curses the young Jewish woman by vampirizing her and forcing her to exist only in the form of a cat.

And then, half a century later, came the Germans. Hans Kauffmann, a young mechanic and driver in Hitler's 13th Panzer Division, comes to Rumania as part of the occupying force. Hans is in love with a sweetheart back home, not completely easy with the Nazi philosophy, and struggling with loneliness and a sense of isolation. And then he finds a little cat....

The historical details ring true. We meet Hermann Göring (who has plans for a German superplane), intrepid aviatrix Hanna Reitsch, and, eventually, Adolf Hitler. We find ourselves drawn into a world of horrors and hopes, into Hans's struggles and challenges. And darned if it doesn't all work and pull the reader in and create a story that resonates emotionally and artistically.

A good writer is one who can make something really worthwhile from unlikely materials. By this definition, Greg Nicoll is a good writer. Recommended!

Dracula Cat edition by Gregory Nicoll Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book was an absolute delight to read. Given the setting (war, Germany, Nazis, etc.), I thought it would be a bit dull, but I really enjoyed it. Mr. Nicoll is a terrific story teller. Highly recommend.
Much more than the cover suggests. WW I I fiction that is actually quite educational. Must continue through the Epilogue.
